Rio Grande

by Seth Chrisman

The mighty Rio Grande rises from the Continental Divide in the San Juan Mountains, originating as a spring and snow-fed mountain stream, then draining to over a dozen tributary systems throughout its 2,000 mile course before eventually feeding the Gulf of Mexico. Flowing through predominantly arid climates, the Rio provides an oasis where canopied bosque ecosystems thrive, supporting extraordinary biodiversity. Heavy water consumption, drought, and urban encroachment continue to strain the Rio's discharge and surrounding habitat. The Rio is a vital source of water for humans and wildlife alike throughout the southwestern US and Mexico. This piece is based on hydrophone and field recordings taken in the upper Rio Grande floodplain, January 2012.
